SFDC Member Discount: Reform and the Roots of Modernism

Date and Time: Tuesday, March 12 @ 8:00 PM
Lecture Location:  Koret Auditorium, de Young Museum
Cost: $15 to the general public, $10 to SFDC members (present your badge at the door)

Tomorrow’s illustrated presentation is by Julie Nicoletta, Professor in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Program at the University of Washington Tacoma. The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, popularly known as the Shakers, left behind a rich legacy of buildings which expresses the group’s religious and social beliefs in worship through physical labor, the possibility of moral perfection and near equality between the sexes.  Dr. Nicoletta examines the legacy of Shaker architecture in regard to 20th century modernism, particularly in the decorative arts.  The Shakers’ interest in economy and efficiency, apparent in the absence of ornament, use of built-in furniture and the love of natural materials, particularly wood, influenced later generations of designers. Most importantly, the goal of some 20th century modernists to reform society through good design, reflects the Shakers’ earlier belief that architecture could forge a path toward perfection.

7:15 PM mini-exhibit: ADAF members will bring baskets and boxes, Shaker or worldly, of all shapes, sizes and functions.

8:00 PM lecture: Koret Auditorium, de Young Museum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Enter from Level B1 of the parking garage; pedestrians enter from the concourse side of Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive and down the steps across the street from the museum’s main entrance.

SFDC Member Discount – The American Decorative Arts Forum

“Thomas Chambers, American Marine and Landscape Painter”

The Constitution and the Guerriere, Ca 1840-1850 Oil on Canvas, 18×31 1/4 inches Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The American Decorative Arts Forum’s August illustrated presentation is by the senior curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Dr. Kathleen A. Foster, whose extensive research has added to a significantly fuller understanding of Thomas Chambers’ pioneering work.

Thomas Chambers (1808-1869) played a pioneering role in expanding American folk art, then consisting almost entirely of portraiture, to include landscape and maritime art in the mid-19th century.  He is best known for melding folk and cosmopolitan styles.  Chambers lapsed deep into obscurity only to be “rediscovered,” as were many other American folk artists, in the 1940’s, as a precursor to modernism in painting.

Kathleen Foster received her bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College and master’s degrees and doctorate from Yale.  Prior to joining the Philadelphia Museum of Art as the Robert L. McNeil senior curator of American art, Dr. Foster was with the Indiana University Art Museum – which has an extraordinary collection of paintings by Thomas Chambers – and taught as an adjunct professor of art history and American studies at Indiana University.

When/Where: The Tuesday, August 14, 2012 lecture begins at 8:00 PM, but arrive at 7:15 PM for the mini-exhibit where members will bring oil, watercolor and print landscapes. Koret Auditorium, de Young Museum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
How Much: Free to ADAF members and $15 to the general public. SFDC members pay only $10.  Show your current SFDC badge at the door.
