The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

3D-Definitive Design + Decor magazine Editor-in-Chief, Alisa Carroll, delves into the beautiful and mysterious world of Jean Paul Gaultier…

With his first career retrospective, French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier argues that divine and profane love both lead to the same state: ecstasy.¬† The provocative, mysterious and magical Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier is a brilliant exploration‚ÄĒand embrace¬≠‚ÄĒof dark and light. Its celebration of human nature is signature Gaultier, a designer recognized for themes of ‚Äúequality, diversity and perversity.‚ÄĚ His is a wildly imaginative aesthetic that transcends boundaries; this is the man, after all, responsible for both Madonna‚Äôs cone bra and the man-skirt.

The exhibition¬†opens with a pantheon of virgins, dressed in gowns inspired by both Renaissance robes and fetish-wear.¬† The exhibition goes on to explore six conceptual ranges of Gaultier‚Äôs work in fashion, film and music.¬† Beyond the extraordinary couture, ingenious technology plays a central role: throughout the galleries, 30 mannequins come ‚Äėalive‚Äô with interactive faces created by audiovisual projections.

With the intense cross-pollination of the interior design and fashion worlds, I imagine we may soon see a little Gaultier emerge in the salons of San Francisco.¬† The couturier, who asserts, after all, that ‚ÄúBeauty exists everywhere,‚ÄĚ has also designed a fabulous furniture collection for Roche Bobois.

Just in Time for Spring

Robert Allen | Beacon Hill
SFDC Galleria #218

Taking part in one of the most on-point trends of the season in both fashion and home design, Beacon Hill introduces Outdoor Ikats. This exclusive showroom only collection offers a distinctive selection of outdoor upholstery, all inspired by original ikat silks from Uzbekistan. The Beacon Hill design team has reinvented this classic motif to feature lush colors, including Clay, a bright and earthy red, Silver, a soft and neutral gray, Lagoon Blue, a complex bright blue, Linen, a natural color resembling un-dyed flax yarns, and Indigo, a rich and saturated blue. The new, Beacon Hill twist on color and geometry creates an up-to-date, but still timeless, take on ikat.

Alexis Audette, operating vice president of design for Beacon Hill, says, ‚ÄúOutdoor Ikats¬†is a collection where each and every pattern is an interpretation of an original silk ikat from Uzbekistan. Ikats are distinctive design motifs, and this collection celebrates their unique contours in outdoor constructions.‚ÄĚ

All Beacon Hill Outdoor Ikats are woven with Sunbrella yarns, giving them easy cleanability and a sturdy construction. Though intended for outdoor use, the soft and supple feel of the Outdoor Ikats enable them to transition to indoor application as well.
